The Writers Workshop Experience

Feeling lonely as a writer? Start a writers workshop like the MuMWuGs did in Cincinnati. Every Monday since 2003, the Monday Morning Writers Group has been meeting to share excerpts from their writing. Our favorite bookstore is Joseph-Beth in the Rookwood Plaza.

Our Mission:

Pure and simple, our mission is to keep our writers writing. Ours is an encouraging group and our particular philosophy is a gentle one. We never go for the jugular although we might nip at the heels.

We have even been the vehicle for an excellent writer in our group to become an adult enrichment instructor with our local university. Barry's class features a waiting list.

In our Cincinnati group, we have authors published with mainstream houses, quite a few working with a small publisher, and a number of self-published authors. Did you know that 2009 is the first year that self-published books outstripped those coming from the publishing houses?

Almost everyone has a book in them. The difference between an author and a writer is that the former has stuck with their project through good days and bad and doggedly pursued their way into print. One creative way to do this is with a group project.

You might try this with an anthology of short stories, essays on life-changing events, a book of poetry, or more specifically, a book of limericks such as our own The Pocket Book of Limericks. When you have sold out your print run, the tingle of excitement of going to a reprint is very satisfying.

Hurdle by hurdle, you can nibble away on the barriers that once seemed like the Great Wall of China given the synergy and support of a writers group.

We have sponsored a writers workshop on the efficient use of a computer, brought in established publishers, benefited from the experiences of visiting authors, spun off an incorporated publishing house, the Losantiville Press, established channels for the purchase of many of our authors' works and set up panels of speakers for bookstore readings.

Sometimes one of our authors writes a play, and of course, we show up in the audience as friendly faces. We've even had a member produce a very well received musical in Glendale, Ohio, a few years ago.

Most of writing is solitary, so it's nice to know as a writer that you are connected at least three hours a week to like-minded individuals.
